He specializes in Java, JavaScript, iOS and Android development and Microsoft’s Power Platform.

Many organizations were forced to develop and launch new apps quickly in 2020. Do you think that need helped inspire the rise of low-code platforms, or was it just a natural progression?

Tom: In the 1980's computers became so affordable and powerful that businesses who rejected new technology struggled to compete with early adopters.

A similar phenomenon occurred with the internet in the 1990's. Organizations that provide the most value thrive, while those who reject new and powerful technologies can't compete. Now it is all about the cloud.

While cloud-based apps are naturally growing in popularity, the shock of being forced to access apps remotely during the pandemic certainly pushed the timeline forward. Covid-19 necessitated social distancing and acted as an accelerant in need of more remote web applications. How many job roles required tools that were only available on workstations connected to the intranet at work? Organizations had to adapt quickly. Low-code platforms provided the quickest way to spin up new web apps that would allow employees to perform their duties.

While the convenience and cost savings would eventually bring more and more companies to low-code platforms, resistance to change is a powerful inhibiter.

Covid-19 indeed forced many organizations to adapt more quickly.

In our eBook, 2021: Trends and Insight for IT Pros, we discover that utilizing low-code platforms like Microsoft's Power Platform led to a 74% reduction in app development costs. Do you see low-code as the future of app development?

Every organization exists to provide value. The winners are the ones who find ways to provide the most value to their stakeholders.

If you try to build something without having the right tools, it makes it hard to accomplish those goals.

To create an application would typically require someone who knows a programming language such as C#, Java, or Python. To have that application work with a database, you now must learn to talk to that database with SQL. On top of that, if you want your app accessed through the web, you have to know HTML, JavaScript, and CSS along with JSON or XML.

You are looking at a high-priced full-stack programmer that knows all of these languages or a whole team of programmers. Add up the costs for weeks, months, and perhaps years of development it will take to deliver a final product. If the app you are creating can fulfill the exact requirements using low-code power tools that require less high-priced expertise and fewer person-hours to complete, it is a no-brainer.

Does this mean low-code platforms will disrupt the app development world? Not entirely. For most standard types of applications, low-code works great.

As long as applications require elements that deviate from the most fundamental norms or require more customization than the low-code platforms provide, programmers will still have a place.

Since low-code is so accessible, do you predict an increase in collaboration between business users and developers?

Low-code platforms make creating new applications within the realm of possibility for computer savvy power users. To shield them from the underlying code, they are limited to the tools and components available in the platform. Those limits are not nearly as restrictive as they used to be. As low-code platforms expand their capabilities, there can also be an increased learning curve. Business users will find the limitations of their abilities, and the boundaries of the medium may lead them to seek more.

When businesses are in need, developers have an opportunity to help produce powerful custom apps with less effort by using low-code solutions. The platform reduces the need to hand-code most functionality while also reducing errors and debugging effort. When more customization is needed, more code-heavy solutions can still be incorporated.

Low-code solutions give business users more opportunity to create the tools they need.

As they gain proficiency, they may never need code or developer assistance. Even with the power of low-code platforms, collaboration with developers will undoubtedly be required in situations that require a higher level of customization.

How should someone get started?

Microsoft has done an excellent job with their role-based course curriculum starting with the Fundamentals, moving on to the Associate level, and finally onto Expert. All of the information is available on our Power Platform product page.

We thank Tom for his time and his valuable input.
96Instructor Insight – Cybersecurity Q&Ahttps://www.newhorizons.com/resources/blog/postid/95/instructor-insight-cybersecurity-qaAnnouncement,CyberSecurity,Instructor Insight,trainingMon, 10 May 2021 09:24:00 GMT
To coincide with the launch of our new eBook 2021: Trends and Insights for IT Pros , we reached out to our subject matter experts with a few questions on the trending topics for 2021.

George Pauwels is a veteran Technical Instructor with over 30 years of experience it the IT industry. He holds several vendor certifications in cybersecurity, and also specializes in Cisco technology.

Many companies have seen the benefit of remote work and will be adopting a hybrid work-from-home model in the future. How can businesses prepare for this sweeping change?

George: One of the most prominent challenges organizations face is that security issues are addressed on an ad hoc basis without acquiring a complete understanding of what threatens the achievement of their business objectives.

For organizations that have developed a formalized risk assessment function, the next step in addressing the risks associated with remote access would be to adopt a standardized industry framework similar to the National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication 800-46: Guide to Enterprise Telework, Remote Access, and Bring Your Own Device Security documentation. Documentation of this format will guide the best, industry-standard approaches to address the risks associated with remote access.

Without a formalized risk assessment function, organizations will have no idea what threats exist to achieve their business objectives. Addressing this one, not well understood, the perceived threat will have the same result as patching a single hole in a sieve of security vulnerabilities.

Anyone can be the target of a security breach. What are your recommendations for companies to properly inform their end-users of potential security risks and preventative best practices?

There are three activities every organization should engage in to ensure its employees are equipped with the knowledge necessary to address security threats. Those three activities include awareness campaigns, formalized corporate training, and industry-associated education.

Awareness campaigns focus on providing constant subtle reminders of what threats exist for the organization and what the employee can do when recognizing those threats in the wild. Awareness campaigns usually follow formalized corporate training.

Formalized corporate training is an activity where subject matter experts engage the organization's employees in instruction and discussion of the current corporate threat landscape. Training comes after industry-associated education.

Industry-associated education involves a more role-specific evaluation and understanding of security concepts, and for some, the proper operation of security controls to provide adequate protection of company assets.

One of the popular misconceptions is that information security is a "Set it and forget it" activity. It is important to remember that people need constant reminders and updates on the importance of protecting corporate information assets.

In our eBook, 2021: Trends and Insight for IT Pros, we refer to cybersecurity as a "team sport." What do you recommend as a winning IT security strategy for most organizations?

Corporate culture is one of the most common reasons an organization's security-related goals are successful and/or are not. If the team members do not have a winning attitude, it is doubtful that they will be successful. Shaping the corporate culture comes from the top. Upper management must create an inclusive environment that is conducive to success. If upper management does not display, encourage, and endorse a winning attitude, the team will flounder if they are distant, non-transparent, and inconsistent. To coin a well-worn quote that some attribute to Mahatma Gandhi, is it vital that they "Be the change they want to see in the world."

What are some next steps for those individuals who are not in the IT department or focused on security? What level of security training do you think is necessary?

Certainly, for end-users the best choice CyberSAFE Extended Edition. It really helps drive security awareness and provides best practices that they can immediately implement. It is also only a half-day in length which is convenient.

And how about for those more advanced that are currently in the IT field?

Too many to name here since United Training offers a wide variety of security related courses but I can certainly highlight a few. Microsoft recently introduced a new set of courses focused on identity management. You can get those details on our Microsoft Security page . CompTIA maintains a cybersecurity certification pathway which is a great option for those a bit more advanced. For experienced cybersecurity professionals I would direct them to the Certified Information Security Systems Professional (CISSP) course or several courses titles from EC-Council such as Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) or EC-Council Computer Hacking Forensics Investigator (CHFI) . Should also mention Cisco security as well. So a lot of different options based on your experience option and vendor of choice.

Thanks to George for his valuable insight.
95Instructor Insight – Cloud Q&Ahttps://www.newhorizons.com/resources/blog/postid/94/instructor-insight-cloud-qaAnnouncement,Cloud,Instructor Insight,Skills,trainingMon, 26 Apr 2021 21:38:00 GMT
To coincide with the launch of our new eBook 2021: Trends and Insights for IT Pros, we reached out to our subject matter experts with a few questions on the trending topics for 2021.

Norm Kennedy is an award-winning Technical Instructor with over 20 years of experience. He specializes in Microsoft and Google Cloud architecture.

Cloud computing has been a standard feature for most IT departments for over a decade. What challenges do you still see customers struggling with?

Norm: For most businesses, the challenge of the cloud comes down to training. Many IT departments are asked to "go to the cloud" from people above that are not sure what that means. For long- entrenched IT staff who have been doing things on-premises, the notion of cloud feels like a loss of control and security. In truth, in some instances, it gives them more control and security. Getting IT staff trained on how to leverage cloud resources will help reduce stress and increase productivity.

In our eBook, 2021: Trends and Insight for IT Pros, we discover that 72% of enterprises describe their cloud strategy as hybrid-first. What are the advantages that make the hybrid cloud model the clear favorite?

Hybrid approaches to cloud enable companies to maintain complete control over data and services are not ready to turn over to a service provider. At the same time, the cloud offers massive vertical and horizontal scalability. Companies want to take advantage of moving those non-mission-critical services and resources to the cloud while keeping control over data they wish to stay on-prem. A classic example is leveraging the cloud for a fully scalable front-end stateless web app that accesses data housed entirely in an on-premises database service.

2020 fast-tracked the digital transformation plans for many organizations. Now that many have adopted the cloud somehow, how do you recommend they continue to evolve with it?

Often companies approach the cloud with a lift and shift mentality. Simply put, taking virtual machines running on-premises and moving them to the cloud as hosted VMs. While this is a significant first step, the IT staff still has to manage the entire stack from the Operating System up. Once comfortable with this type of Infrastructure as Service (IaaS) migration, companies should then begin to look at ways to offload some administrative overhead by leveraging both Platform and Software as a Service offering (PaaS & SaaS). For example, instead of deploying VMs and installing a hosting platform such as IIS and then deploying the code to the web app in an IaaS model (thus managing the OS/IIS application/Code and all patching.) Instead, they could deploy a PaaS web app allowing the provider to manage the OS and application tier while simply focusing on code.

I know you have primarily been focused on Microsoft technology for most of your career. What are some next steps that you can recommend to our readers who are either new to Cloud or more advanced?

United Training offers cloud solutions from all of the big players in the cloud space.
